Managing Cleaner Fatigue During Intensive Projects

One of the most important operational lessons we learned early in our work relates to cleaner fatigue.

Deep cleaning student accommodation at scale is physically demanding. During peak turnaround periods, operatives may be working continuously for several days.

We observed that after approximately five to six days of intensive deep cleaning, fatigue can begin to affect performance if not properly managed.

Our Relief Pool Workforce Model

To maintain consistent standards throughout every project, we developed a relief pool staffing system.

This model allows us to rotate fully trained operatives throughout the project.

Typically:

• A team works on site for several days
• Fresh operatives rotate in from the relief pool
• The original team takes two to three days of rest before returning or moving to another site

This system enables us to maintain:

• Consistent cleaning quality across all rooms
• Efficient project delivery
• Reduced snagging lists
• Improved staff wellbeing

Where practical, our teams also stay temporarily on or near site during projects, helping to reduce travel fatigue and lower environmental impact.
